Case Volume Statistics About Surgery Centers With More Than 50% Orthopedics

Here are five case volume statistics about surgery centers that perform more than 50 percent orthopedics, from VMG Health’s 2009 Intellimarker.

  1. The average surgery center with more than 50 percent orthopedics performs an average of 3,452 (median: 2,755) cases annually. This is an average of 13.8 cases per day (median: 11.0).
  2. The average surgery center with more than 50 percent orthopedics has 3.71 (median: 4.00) operating rooms. An average of 727 procedures (median: 745) are performed annually per OR, which averages to 2.9 (median: 3.0) procedures daily.
  3. The average surgery center with more than 50 percent orthopedics has 2.6 (median: 1.0) procedure rooms. An average of 588 procedures (median: 467) are performed annually per OR, which averages to 2.4 (median: 1.9) procedures daily.
  4. The average net revenue per orthopedics case for surgery centers with more than 50 percent orthopedics is $2,481 (median: $2,527).
  5. Here are the average percentages of cases performed by top producing physicians in surgery centers with more than 50 percent orthopedics:
    • Top two physicians — 36 percent
    • Top five physicians — 61 percent
    • Top 10 physicians — 84 percent
