Paul L. Kaufman, M.D., has been named the 2009 recipient of The Glaucoma Foundation’s Robert Ritch Award for Innovation and Excellence in Glaucoma. The New York-based foundation’s award recognizes the contributions of individuals who have “played a significant and unique role in promoting the medicine and science of glaucoma” and was presented during the foundation’s International Think Tank earlier this month. This year’s Think Tank focused on exfoliation syndrome, “the first potentially curable glaucoma,” the foundation said.
Dr. Kaufman is the Peter A. Duehr Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (Madison). He has had continuous research funding from the U.S. National Eye Institute for 30 years, has authored more than 300 original scientific articles and holds several patents related to drugs under development for treating glaucoma.
