Appeals Court Awards Synthes $21M in Patent Dispute Against Medtronic

An appeals court has awarded Synthes $21 million in its patent-infringement case against Medtronic about an artificial disc replacement device, according to a release from Synthes.

The decision by the U.S. District Court in Memphis follows a federal jury’s ruling against Medtronic in November and the court’s denial last month of Medtronic’s motion for a new trial.

West Chester, Pa.-based Synthes asserted that Medtronic’s Maverick products infringed its patent on ProDisc-L, used to replace vertebral discs in the lumbar spine.
