The Joint Commission Announces 2009 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award Winners

The National Quality Forum and The Joint Commission announced the winners of the 2009 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Awards, according to a Joint Commission news release.

Honorees were announced in five categories, including a new international category. “This year’s winners represent the best of what is possible in improving the safety and quality of healthcare,” Janet Corrigan, PhD, MBA. president and CEO of the NQF, said in the release. “They are at the forefront of their fields and have taken risks to improve healthcare by addressing the way care is delivered.”

The winners for each category are:

  • Individual achievement — Gary S. Kaplan, MD (Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, Wash.).
  • Research — Tejal Gandhi, MD (Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston).
  • Innovation in patient safety and quality at the national level — Michigan Health & Hospital Association Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality (Lansing, Mich.).
  • Innovation in patient safety and quality at the local level — Mercy Hospital Anderson (Cincinnati, Ohio).
  • International — Noreen Zafar, MD, FRCOG (Lahore, Pakistan).

The awards will be presented at the NQF’s Annual Policy Conference, “Beyond Measure — The Quality Imperative in Healthcare Reform,” in National Harbor, Md., on Oct. 14-15.
